The 2026 Melbourne Cup is run on Tuesday 3 November 2026 at Flemington. It is a Group 1 race over 3200 metres and an open handicap, which means the handicapper sets the weight each horse carries to even up the field. The field is limited to 24 runners, with no emergencies.

What a 24 runner field does to the maths

A big field is what makes Cup betting different. More runners means longer odds on every bet type, bigger exotic pools and more ways to be wrong.

BetPossible results with 24 startersOne random ticket wins
Win241 in 24 (4.2%)
Quinella2761 in 276
Trifecta12,1441 in 12,144
First Four255,0241 in 255,024

Form, weight and barrier change the real chance of each runner, which is what the odds try to price. But the table shows why exotic dividends on Cup day can be huge, and why most exotic tickets lose. Big fields also mean more close finishes for the places; the dead heat rules explain how a tie splits your payout, and the dead heat calculator works it out.

How to bet on the Melbourne Cup

You can bet on the Cup with any licensed Australian bookmaker or the TAB, online, by phone or in person. Our betting sites guide compares the licensed options, and our reviews of Sportsbet, TAB, Ladbrokes and bet365 cover how each one handles racing. These are the main options.

Win, place and each way. A win bet needs your horse first. A place bet needs it in the paid places: on the TAB, races with 16 or more starters pay four place dividends, so a full Cup field pays 1st to 4th on the tote. Each way is both bets at once. The each way calculator shows what you get back in each case.

Exotics. Quinellas, trifectas and first fours are paid from tote pools, and the Cup pools are among the biggest of the year. Boxing your runners covers any order; flexi betting lets you spend what you like. Use the boxed trifecta calculator, quinella calculator and first four calculator to see the cost before you bet. Multi-race exotics work differently: a quaddie asks you to find the winners of four races, and its cost grows fast as you add runners.

Early markets. Bookmakers open fixed odds markets on the Cup months ahead. An early price can be longer, but there is a catch: early markets are usually all-in, which means you can lose your stake if your horse does not make the field or is scratched. Read the market rules before you take an early price; our futures betting guide explains how All In markets work. A late scratching affects fixed prices on the rest of the field too: the scratching deductions guide explains the schedule, and the deductions calculator shows what a deduction leaves you.

Office sweeps. A sweep gives every entrant a random runner for a fixed amount. It is the cheapest way to have a horse in the Cup and keeps the day social.

What exotic boxes cost on Cup day

Cup exotics cost the same per combination as any other race, but the bigger field tempts people into bigger boxes. Here is what $1 units and a $20 outlay look like.

BetRunners boxedCombinationsCost at 100%$20 outlay is
Quinella46$6333.33%
Quinella615$15133.33%
Trifecta424$2483.33%
Trifecta6120$12016.67%
First Four5120$12016.67%
First Four6360$3605.56%

On the TAB the flexi percentage must be at least 1% and the minimum investment is 50 cents.

Fixed odds or the tote on Cup day?

A fixed price locks in your return when you bet. A tote dividend depends on how the pool is bet and is only final after the race. Popular runners tend to shorten on the tote as the public piles in on Cup day, while some longshots pay more on the tote than their fixed price. Our tote vs fixed odds guide explains when each one tends to pay more.

Bet with a plan

Set the amount you are happy to lose before the day, split it across the bets you want, and treat any collect as a bonus. Licensed Australian wagering providers cannot accept credit cards or crypto for online bets (a ban that started on 11 June 2024), and every one of them is covered by BetStop, the national self-exclusion register.

Pundit tip: a $20 Cup budget split into a $10 each way bet and a $10 flexi trifecta gives you a runner to cheer for and a long shot at a big dividend, without chasing.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Melbourne Cup in 2026?

The 2026 Melbourne Cup is run on Tuesday 3 November 2026 at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It is a Group 1 open handicap over 3200 metres.

How many horses run in the Melbourne Cup?

The field is limited to 24 runners, and there are no emergencies. Scratchings after the final field is set reduce the number of starters.

How many places are paid in the Melbourne Cup?

On the TAB, races with 16 or more starters pay four place dividends, so a full Cup field pays 1st to 4th on the tote. Fixed odds bookmakers set their own place terms for the race, so check the terms on your bet slip.

How much does a boxed trifecta cost on the Melbourne Cup?

The same as any other race: $1 per combination at 100%. A 4 horse box is $24, 5 horses $60 and 6 horses $120. With flexi you can bet less, for example $12 on a 5 horse box for 20%.

What is the best bet for the Melbourne Cup?

There is no bet that beats the margin, so the best bet is the one that matches your view and budget. A win or each way bet on a runner you like is simple; a small flexi trifecta box gives a shot at a big dividend; an office sweep is the cheapest way to have a runner.

Can I bet on the Melbourne Cup with a credit card?

No, not online or by phone with an Australian wagering provider. The credit card ban for online wagering started on 11 June 2024 and also covers credit-related products and digital currencies.
