Key facts
- Every licensed Australian online wagering provider must offer a binding deposit limit and prompt you to set one when you open an account.
- A lower limit must apply immediately. A higher limit cannot apply until 7 days after the day you ask.
- You must be prompted to review your limit at least once a year, with periods that include daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly.
- TAB, for example, offers deposit limits over 1, 7, 14 or 28 days, spend limits, and breaks from 1 to 180 days.
- Offshore casinos are not licensed in Australia, so these national rules do not bind them.
What a deposit limit is
A gambling deposit limit is a cap you set on how much new money you can put into a betting account over a set period, such as a day, a week or a month. Once you hit it, the provider must refuse further deposits until the period resets. In Australia it is not optional for licensed online bookmakers: they have had to offer binding deposit limits since 26 May 2019 under the National Consumer Protection Framework.
The rules licensed providers must follow
The framework's National Policy Statement, published by the Department of Social Services, sets out exactly how deposit limits must work. These are the parts that matter to you.
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Prompt at sign-up | You must be asked to set a deposit limit while opening the account |
| Yearly review | You must be prompted to set or review your limit at least once a year, at your next bet after each anniversary of your first bet |
| Choice of periods | Options include daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly |
| Decreases | Must be applied immediately |
| Increases | Must not be applied until 7 days after the day the request was received |
| Binding | The provider must not accept deposits above your limit |
The framework sits alongside other protections from the same package: monthly activity statements by email since 31 July 2022, a simple account closure process, a ban on providers offering you credit, and BetStop, the national self-exclusion register.
A worked example of the 7-day rule
Say your weekly limit is $50. After a bad week you ask to raise it to $200 on a Monday. Under the policy, the increase cannot apply until 7 days after the day the request was received, so the earliest it can start is the following Monday. Until then your limit stays at $50.
Now flip it. You ask on that same Monday to drop the limit to $20. That change must apply immediately.
That asymmetry is deliberate. If the urge to raise a limit arrives in the heat of a session, a week gives it time to pass. If you find yourself requesting increases, treat it as a warning sign rather than a formality.
Limit tools at a licensed bookmaker
Deposit limits are the legal minimum. Most licensed providers offer more. TAB's safer gambling tools are a good example of the range.
| Tool | How it works at TAB | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Set over 1, 7, 14 or 28 days; decreases apply immediately, increases take 7 days | Capping new money |
| Spend limit | Set over 1, 7 or 28 days; same rule for increases and decreases | Capping total betting, including re-bet winnings |
| Take A Break | Suspends the account for 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, 30, 90 or 180 days | A cooling-off period |
| Debit card limit | A daily cap on card deposits, set by phone on 131 802 | Adding friction to card top-ups |
| Activity statements | Up to 12 months of transactions in My Account | Seeing what you have actually spent |
| Close account | Ends access to the account | Stopping with one provider |
A deposit limit only counts new money. If you win and re-bet the winnings, your total betting can run well past the deposit figure. That is why a spend limit, where offered, is worth setting too.
For a break from every licensed bookmaker at once, BetStop is the tool, and our self-exclusion guide covers how it works and what it leaves out.
How to choose your number
Pick the number from your budget, not from how much you hope to win. A simple method:
- Write down what is left each month after rent or mortgage, bills, food, debts and savings.
- Decide what part of that you are genuinely happy to lose, in full, on entertainment.
- Set the limit over the shortest period available, so one bad night cannot use up a month.
Example. If $120 a month is your gambling budget, a weekly limit of $30 is safer than a monthly limit of $120, because the monthly version can disappear in a single session. Over a year, $30 a week adds up to $1,560 and $120 a month to $1,440, in our calculation, so the weekly limit also makes the yearly total visible.
It helps to know what your money buys. Every bet carries a built-in edge for the house or bookmaker, explained in our house edge guide. For pokies, the pokies calculator shows the average cost of an hour of play at any bet size, which is a sobering way to sanity-check a limit.
Deposit limits at online casinos
The national rules above apply to licensed Australian online wagering providers. Online casino games and online pokies cannot legally be offered to people in Australia, so offshore casinos are not licensed here and the framework does not bind them. Some offshore sites offer their own limit tools, but no Australian regulator checks that they work. ACMA warns that illegal services do not give you the same customer protection as a licensed service.
If you want a limit you can rely on, a bank gambling block or self-exclusion is firmer than a casino's own setting.
Making a limit stick
- Set it when you are calm, not during or straight after a session.
- Lower it the moment you feel it is too high. Decreases are instant.
- Set a spend limit and a deposit limit where both are offered.
- Read your monthly activity statement. It shows what you really spent, not what you remember.
- Tell someone your limit, so there is a second person who notices if it creeps up.
- Remove saved cards from betting apps so every top-up takes effort.
Pundit tip: if you keep hitting your limit, that is useful information. A limit that is always maxed out is doing a job, but it might also be telling you it is time for a longer break.

Frequently asked questions
Do Australian betting sites have to offer deposit limits?
Yes. Under the National Consumer Protection Framework, every licensed online wagering provider must offer deposit limits, prompt you to set one at sign-up and remind you to review it at least once a year. The limit is binding: the provider must refuse deposits above it.
How long does it take to increase a deposit limit?
At least 7 days. The national policy says an increase must not be applied until 7 days after the day the request was received. A decrease must apply straight away.
What is the difference between a deposit limit and a spend limit?
A deposit limit caps the new money you can put into the account in a period. A spend limit, where offered, caps how much you can bet, which matters because winnings you re-bet do not count as deposits.
Do deposit limits work at online casinos?
The national rules only cover licensed Australian wagering providers. Online casinos cannot legally be offered to people in Australia, so any limit tool an offshore casino offers is its own and is not overseen by an Australian regulator. A bank gambling block or self-exclusion is a firmer barrier.
What deposit limit should I set?
An amount you could lose in full without touching bills, savings or debts, over the shortest period the site offers. If you are not sure, start low: you can lower a limit instantly, and raising it takes a week.
