Key facts
- Queen of the Nile is an Aristocrat poker machine. Aristocrat describes its Game Reserve version as scatter-triggered free games in which all wins are tripled.
- ACT records show a Queen of the Nile Pick A Box Hyperlink version on Aristocrat's MK6 platform approved in December 2004, paying 82.27% from the machine itself.
- Under the ACT's 87% minimum, a linked machine paying 82.27% must send at least 4.73% of turnover to the jackpot, in our calculation.
- In Victoria, every machine must be able to show its return to player, games per win, odds of its top 5 and bottom 5 wins and its bet range.
- Queen of the Nile is in Aristocrat's free Heart of Vegas app. Real money online versions cannot legally be offered to people in Australia.
What Queen of the Nile is
Queen of the Nile is an Egyptian-themed poker machine from Aristocrat, the Sydney-founded maker covered in our Aristocrat pokies guide. Aristocrat's description of its Game Reserve edition is short: "Scatter wins award Free Games in which all wins are tripled", with wild multipliers in the feature. That tripling is the heart of the game, and it explains why the free games feel so important when you play it.
The name has also been reused across newer Aristocrat families, so "Queen of the Nile" on a cabinet today may not be the version you remember.
Queen of the Nile versions in the record
The ACT's legislation register publishes every gaming machine approval. These are the Queen of the Nile entries we found, all naming Aristocrat Technologies Australia Pty Ltd:
| Approved | Machine | What the record shows |
|---|---|---|
| 14 Dec 2004 | The Original Queen of the Nile: Pick A Box Hyperlink | MK6 platform, 1c and 2c; machine return 82.27% (setting 99) or 79.79% (setting 01) |
| 28 Sep 2006 | Multilink (with Spring Carnival, 50 Lions, Choy Sun Doa) | Queen of the Nile setting 06 at 82.06%, approved only on a link where machine plus link return at least 87% |
| 25 Aug 2014 | Player's Choice Classic Edition (with Indian Dreaming, Wild Stallion, Big Red) | Queen of the Nile at 1c and 2c, 90.31% or 92.26% |
| 25 Aug 2023 | Cash Express Luxury Line: Queen of the Nile | Tested with updated Aristocrat software in two specifications, one marked SAP (1.DG139) and one without (1.HDG50); no return figure listed |
Aristocrat's current product pages add a modern take, Flamin Fortune Queen of the Nile. Its free games use reveal symbols that open into cash-on-reel values, wilds, base game symbols or royals, and it carries a Hold & Spin feature triggered by cash-on-reel values. That is a different machine with a familiar name, closer in style to our hold and spin pokies guide than to the original.
How much of the return is the jackpot?
The 2004 and 2006 records show something most players never see: on a linked machine, part of the return to player is not paid by the game at all. It goes into the jackpot pool.
The ACT's Gaming Machine Regulation 2004 sets an 87% minimum payout and says that on a linked jackpot the minimum is the machine's own payout plus its contribution to the link. Applied to the Queen of the Nile records, in our calculation:
| Version | Machine's own return | Minimum link share to reach 87% | Per $1,000 played |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pick A Box Hyperlink, setting 99 | 82.27% | 4.73 points | $47.30 into the jackpot pool |
| Pick A Box Hyperlink, setting 01 | 79.79% | 7.21 points | $72.10 into the jackpot pool |
| Multilink, setting 06 | 82.06% | 4.94 points | $49.40 into the jackpot pool |
So on setting 01, at least 8.3% of everything the machine was required to return would come back as linked jackpots. Jackpots land rarely and on one machine at a time, which means most players on that bank get back noticeably less than 87% between jackpot hits. Our jackpot pokies guide covers how those pools build and pay.
What tripled free games really do
Tripling sounds generous, so it is worth being precise. Suppose a line win pays 40 credits in the base game. The same combination in the free games pays 120. But the game's designers know that, and the approved return already includes it. The tripling does not add to the total return; it shifts more of that return into the feature.
In practice that makes the base game leaner. A bigger slice of what Queen of the Nile pays back arrives in occasional free game rounds, and a smaller slice drips back spin by spin. That is the trade our pokies volatility guide describes: same average, lumpier ride.
How to read a Queen of the Nile machine
Victoria spells out exactly what a poker machine must be able to show you. A venue may not let anyone play a machine that cannot display this "electronic game information" when a player asks for it:
| Item on the screen | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Return to player | The long-run percentage paid back; if the game has a range, the whole range must be shown |
| Theoretical games per win | The average number of games for each win, playing one line |
| Odds of the 5 most valuable wins | How rare the top prizes are |
| Odds of the 5 least valuable wins | How often the small prizes land |
| Maximum and minimum bet | The bet range on that machine |
| Linked jackpot details | That the machine is linked, its total return, and the share from the link |
Two of those lines do real work. Games per win: if a screen showed 1 win every 4.2 games, that is a 23.8% chance per game on one line. In our calculation you would still go 10 games without a win about 6.6% of the time, and 20 games about 0.43% of the time. And the linked jackpot line tells you how much of the return sits in the pool rather than the reels, the same split shown in the table above.
Victoria also requires machines to show your own session figures on request: cash in, credits played, credits won, session win or loss and the time you started. Checking that screen every so often is one of the simplest limits you can set.
Free and online Queen of the Nile
The legal way to try the theme without money is Heart of Vegas, from Aristocrat's social casino studio Product Madness. Its Australian App Store listing names the "QUEEN OF THE NILE slot machine", is rated R 18+ for frequent simulated gambling, and states that it "does not offer gambling or an opportunity to win real money or prizes". The app is free but sells coin packages, which buy nothing you can ever cash out.
For real money, the venue machine is the only legal option in Australia. Online pokies cannot be offered to people in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Playing on an offshore site is not an offence for you, but ACMA blocks illegal operators and Australian regulators cannot help if one refuses to pay. Before you play anywhere, set a budget; free support is on our gambling help page.
Frequently asked questions
What are the free games on Queen of the Nile?
Aristocrat describes Game Reserve Queen of the Nile as having scatter wins that award free games in which all wins are tripled, with wild multipliers. Newer versions such as Flamin Fortune Queen of the Nile add reveal symbols and a Hold & Spin feature.
What is the RTP of the Queen of the Nile poker machine?
It depends on the version and setting. ACT approval records list 82.27% from the machine on a 2004 Hyperlink version (with the jackpot making up the rest), and 90.31% or 92.26% in the 2014 Player's Choice Classic Edition. The machine's information screen shows the setting it runs.
Is Queen of the Nile still in Australian venues?
It is still in recent records. A 2023 ACT approval lists Cash Express Luxury Line Queen of the Nile, in one form marked SAP and one without, among Aristocrat games tested with updated machine software. Which titles a venue puts on its floor is the venue's choice.
Can I play Queen of the Nile pokies online in Australia?
Not for real money from a legal Australian site, because online pokies cannot be offered to people in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. The free Heart of Vegas app from Aristocrat's Product Madness includes Queen of the Nile with virtual coins only.
Does tripling free game wins make Queen of the Nile pay more?
No. The tripling is already built into the game's approved return to player. It makes the feature a bigger share of what the game pays back, not a bigger total.
