Stake casino review: Australia is on its prohibited list, so read this before you use a VPN

Stake.com names its operator and licence and has some of the best limit tools we have seen. It also lists Australia as a prohibited jurisdiction and treats using a VPN to get in as a breach.

Good

  • Operator, registration and licence numbers published
  • Self-service deposit, loss and wager limits with 24-hour delays on increases
  • Product exclusion from casino or sports, 24 hours to indefinite

Watch out

  • Australia is a prohibited jurisdiction in its own terms
  • Circumventing geo-blocks can cost you your winnings
  • Withdrawal fees at Stake's discretion
  • No independent complaints body named

Key facts

  • Clause 14.3 of Stake's terms lists Australia among the 'Prohibited Jurisdictions' whose residents and visitors 'are not permitted' to use the service.
  • Operator: Medium Rare N.V. (Curacao, reg. 145353), licensed by the Curacao Gaming Authority under licence OGL/2024/1451/0918.
  • Using a VPN or false location details to get around geo-blocking is a breach; Stake can close the account, void bets and withhold winnings.
  • No stake.com domain was on ACMA's blocked list on 8 Oct 2026. stake.com.au redirects to an unrelated share-investing app.
  • Self-service deposit, loss and wager limits, product exclusions and self-exclusion with a 6-month minimum.

Stake casino review: the answer for Australians

Stake.com does not want Australian players, and says so in writing. Clause 14.3 of its terms lists "Afghanistan, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium" and about 40 more places, and declares that persons "located in or reside in" them "are not permitted make use of the Service". We score Stake 4.1 out of 10: well run on paper, with strong limit tools, but closed to you by its own rules and by Australian law.

We read Stake's terms, responsible gambling page and footer on 8 October 2026 through a fetch service (Stake's security check blocks automated browsers). This is a desk review; we did not open an account.

Stake in Australia, and the VPN question

Australians search for Stake a lot, and the obvious follow-up is whether a VPN gets around the restriction. The terms deal with that directly:

  • 14.3: the restriction applies to residents "and citizens of other nations while located in a Prohibited Jurisdiction", so being a visitor does not help.
  • 14.4: trying "to manipulate your real location through the use of VPN, proxy, or similar services" to get around geo-blocking "constitutes a breach".
  • 5.2 and 4.21: for a breach, Stake can close or suspend the account, void bets, and "withhold and/or retain any and all amounts" otherwise payable, including winnings, as far as the law allows.

So the downside of playing from Australia is not only legal. If you win and Stake later works out where you were, its contract lets it keep the money. Clause 4.23 says that if it closes an account, it will tell you how to withdraw any remaining balance, but that is not a promise to pay winnings.

Separately, the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 prohibits offering online casino games to people in Australia. No stake.com domain appeared on ACMA's blocked gambling websites list on our 8 October 2026 snapshot (mystake.com, which is on it, is a different brand). See are online pokies legal in Australia for what the law means for players.

Not the Stake investing app

Searches for "stake australia" mix the casino with a share-investing app of the same name. On 8 October 2026, stake.com.au redirected to hellostake.com, the investing app. Nothing in this review applies to it.

Who owns Stake?

The footer: "Stake is owned and operated by Medium Rare N.V.", registration number 145353, registered address Seru Loraweg 17 B, Curacao, with payment agents Medium Rare Limited and MRS Tech Limited. Clause 1.1 adds: "Medium Rare N.V. is licensed by the Curaçao Gaming Authority under license number OGL/2024/1451/0918." It is one of only a handful of brands in our reviews where every part of that chain is published.

Complaints go to live chat or email (clause 29.1). If that fails, you "may pursue remedies in the governing law jurisdiction", which is Curacao, whose courts have exclusive jurisdiction (clauses 23.1 and 25.1). No alternative dispute resolution service is named.

Payments and withdrawal rules

Stake's terms are short on numbers:

RuleClause
Wager 100% of a deposit before a fiat withdrawal8.5
The same 100% rule applies to crypto withdrawals8.10
Minimum withdrawal shown on the site when you withdraw8.7
Stake "may charge You a fee on withdrawals at its discretion"8.9
KYC documents can be requested at any time, and payments restricted until then4.8
Unclaimed bonuses cancelled after their claim period or 60 days12.10

There is no stated maximum withdrawal, and no processing time in the terms. A discretionary withdrawal fee is the clause we like least: you cannot know the cost of cashing out until you try.

Responsible gambling: the best toolset here

Stake's responsible gambling page offers more self-service control than any other casino in this batch:

  1. Deposit limits, daily, set in USD. Decreases are immediate; increases or removal wait 24 hours.
  2. Loss limits by day, week or month, on net losses, unsettled bets included.
  3. Wager limits by day, week or month, on total stakes.
  4. Product exclusion from the casino or from sports for 24 hours, 7, 30 or 90 days, or indefinitely; not reversible early through self-service.
  5. Break in play for a day, a week or a month.
  6. Self-exclusion, indefinite, with a minimum of six months and a return-to-play review before reactivation.

There is also a budget calculator. The help lines listed are overseas services; in Australia, call Gambling Help on 1800 858 858.

Games and support

Stake runs a casino and a sportsbook. Because we could not log in, we did not check the lobby, providers or per-game return figures, so games score no higher than 5.0. Support is by live chat and email. For the sports side, our offshore betting sites Australia guide explains why licensed Australian bookmakers are the legal option.

How we scored it

  • Payments 4.0: no published cap or timing, and withdrawal fees at Stake's discretion.
  • Terms 3.5: clear about who can play, but the VPN and breach clauses let Stake keep winnings.
  • Safety 1.5: a named and numbered Curacao licence, but Australia is prohibited and play from here breaches the contract.
  • Responsible gambling 7.5: six self-service tools, delayed increases, product exclusions.
  • Games 5.0: not checked from inside the lobby.
  • Support 4.5: chat and email; not tested.

Weighted: 4.1 out of 10. The method is on how we rate casinos. Jackpot City is another well-known brand whose own terms exclude Australians.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use Stake casino in Australia?

Not under its own terms. Clause 14.3 lists Australia as a prohibited jurisdiction, applying to residents and to anyone located there, and clause 14.4 says using a VPN or proxy to get around that is a breach. Australian law also prohibits offering online casino games here.

Is Stake legit?

Stake names its operator, Medium Rare N.V., its Curacao registration number and a Curacao Gaming Authority licence number. It is a licensed offshore casino, but the licence does not cover Australia and its terms exclude Australians.

What happens if I play Stake from Australia with a VPN?

Stake's terms treat it as a breach of its player warranties. It can close or suspend the account, void bets and, to the extent the law allows, withhold amounts including winnings.

Who owns Stake?

The site footer says Stake is owned and operated by Medium Rare N.V., registration number 145353, with a registered address in Curacao. Its payment agents are named as Medium Rare Limited and MRS Tech Limited.

Is Stake the same as the Stake investing app?

No. When we checked on 8 October 2026, stake.com.au redirected to hellostake.com, a share-investing app that shares the name. This review covers the stake.com casino.
