Key facts
- Rugby union can end in a draw, so the result market is either two-way (with a dead heat rule) or three-way (with a draw price), and the two settle differently.
- Under the TAB's Victorian rules, a draw in a two-way market halves the payout, and where a draw price is offered, extra time is ignored and team bets lose.
- A penalty try does not count for a first or next try scorer bet under those rules unless a penalty try price was offered; the next try decides it.
- Super Rugby Pacific 2027 starts on Friday 12 February and the Grand Final is on Saturday 26 June, with a top six finals series.
- The Men's Rugby World Cup 2027 runs from 1 October to 13 November in Australia, with 24 teams and 52 matches.
Rugby union betting at a glance
Rugby union betting is fixed odds betting on a Test, a Super Rugby match or a tournament, placed with a licensed Australian bookmaker before kick-off. Three things set it apart from other football codes on the slip: games can finish level, knockout games can go to extra time, and the referee can award a penalty try that no player scores. Each has a settlement rule. The rules quoted here come from the TAB's published Victorian sports betting rules; check your own bookmaker's rules too.
Rugby union markets
| Market | What you pick | Settlement point |
|---|---|---|
| Head to head (two-way) | The winning team | A draw is settled as a dead heat |
| Result (three-way) | Home, draw or away | Extra time ignored; team bets lose on a draw |
| Line | The winner after a points start | Half points, so no ties |
| Winning margin | Team and a band, such as 1 to 12 or 13+ | Bands can include a draw option |
| Total points | Over or under the combined score | Check whether extra time counts |
| First or anytime try scorer | A player to score a try | Penalty try rule applies |
| Tournament and season winner | Super Rugby or World Cup champion | Settled when decided |
Draws: two-way against three-way
A rugby union game can finish level, and the market you choose decides what a draw costs you. Here is the same match priced both ways:
| Market | Prices | Adds up to | What a draw does to $20 on the favourite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head to head, no draw option | $1.40 / $3.00 | 104.76% | Dead heat: returns $14.00 instead of $28.00 |
| Three-way result | $1.45 / $21.00 / $2.90 | 108.21% | Bet loses: returns $0 |
The three-way market pays a little more for the favourite ($1.45 against $1.40) because you carry the draw risk yourself. It also carries a bigger margin in this example: in our calculation a balanced book keeps 7.59% on the three-way, against 4.55% on the two-way. The two-way head to head bet costs you half your stake on a draw at a price under $2.00, but never all of it. The dead heat calculator works out the return for any price.
Knockout games and extra time
A knockout match has to produce a team that goes through, so a game level at full time is decided by the tournament's tie-break rules. Under the TAB's Victorian rules:
- In a two-way market, the final result includes extra time unless the bookmaker said otherwise when you bet (rule 10.8). You are paid on the team that goes through.
- Where a draw price was offered, the result is decided without extra time and only the draw wins (rule 10.9).
So in a quarter-final that is level at full time, a two-way bet on the eventual winner wins and a three-way bet on the same team loses. Read the market name, not just the team name.
Line and margin betting in rugby union
Line betting is how bookmakers make a mismatch worth betting on. A Test between a top nation and an emerging one might carry a line of -30.5, so the favourite must win by 31 or more for a line bet on it to win. The TAB's Victorian rules set a points start to half a point unless you are told otherwise, so one side always covers.
Margin bets ask for the winner and a band of points. The narrower the band, the longer the price, because you need two things to go right: the winner and the size of the win.
Try scorer markets and the penalty try
A penalty try is awarded to a team, not a player. Under the TAB's Victorian rules, unless the market offered a price for a penalty try:
- If the first or next try is a penalty try, first or next try scorer bets are settled on the try after it.
- Bets stand whether the player you backed, or any other player, leaves the field or is sent off.
- The same approach applies to next scoring play markets.
So a player sent off in the 10th minute does not make your bet void. It just makes it very likely to lose.
Super Rugby betting: the 2027 season
Super Rugby Pacific 2027 starts on Friday 12 February. Ten teams play a 17-week regular season, with 16 games each, up from 14 in 2026 and with one bye instead of two. The top six make the finals: first and second go straight to the semi-finals, third and fourth host sudden-death elimination finals against fifth and sixth, and the Grand Final is on Saturday 26 June 2027.
A longer season means more games for season-long futures bets, which stay open for months and are exposed to injuries the whole way.
Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia
World Rugby's schedule for the Men's Rugby World Cup 2027 confirms:
| Detail | Fact |
|---|---|
| Opening match | Australia v Hong Kong China, Perth Stadium, 1 October 2027 |
| Teams and matches | 24 teams, the first expanded format, 52 matches over 19 match days |
| New knockout round | Round of 16 in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney |
| Who advances from pools | Pool winners and runners-up, plus the four best third-placed teams |
| Host cities | Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Townsville |
| Final | Saturday 13 November 2027, Stadium Australia, Sydney |
A home World Cup means more Australian interest and more markets, but the maths of a tournament winner bet does not change: every name in the market carries part of the margin.
Rugby betting and the rules in Australia
You can bet on rugby union only with a bookmaker licensed in an Australian state or territory, and online only until kick-off. ACMA says in-play betting on sports matches is prohibited with limited exceptions, and the phone exception needs the selection, bet type, amount and confirmation all given wholly by phone. A home World Cup does not change that. Licensed wagering providers also cannot accept credit cards or crypto.
Pundit tip: in pool games, a two-way head to head on a short favourite is the safer shape if you are worried about a draw: you lose half your stake, not all of it. In knockout games, check whether the two-way market includes extra time.

Frequently asked questions
What happens to a rugby union bet if the game is a draw?
It depends on the market. Under the TAB's Victorian sports rules, a two-way head to head with no draw option is settled as a dead heat, so the payout is halved. In a three-way market that offered a draw price, bets on either team lose.
Does extra time count in rugby union betting?
In a two-way market, results include extra time unless the bookmaker says otherwise, under the TAB's Victorian rules. In a market with a draw price, the result is decided without extra time. This matters in knockout games such as World Cup finals.
Does a penalty try count in try scorer betting?
Not under the TAB's rules, unless the market offered a price for a penalty try. If the first try is a penalty try, first try scorer bets are settled on the next try.
When is Super Rugby Pacific 2027?
The 2027 season starts on Friday 12 February. Ten teams play a 17-week regular season of 16 games each, the top six make the finals, and the Grand Final is on Saturday 26 June.
Where is the 2027 Rugby World Cup?
In Australia. World Rugby's schedule opens with Australia v Hong Kong China at Perth Stadium on 1 October 2027 and finishes with the Final at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 13 November.
