Casino cashback: what it is really paid on, and the maths of the wagering

Cashback sounds like a refund on a bad night. Often it is a bonus worked out on your deposits, with wagering attached. Here is how to read the terms and what the maths says it is worth.

Coin with a return arrow chained to a heavy ball and a magnifying glass: casino cashback often comes with wagering

Key facts

  • Cashback is only as good as its base. Mino Casino's Daily Cashback is 5% of the day's deposits, not of your losses.
  • That cashback comes as a bonus with 30x wagering, a 48-hour expiry and a EUR 500 cap on winnings.
  • Quick test: multiply the wagering by the house edge. Above 1, the betting you must do costs more on average than the cashback is worth: 30 x 4% = 1.2.
  • Mino Casino's VIP cashback is 7% with 20x wagering: 20 x 4% = 0.8, so the required betting costs a little less than the cashback on average.
  • Under the casino's general bonus terms, your own money is bet before the bonus money once a bonus is active.

What casino cashback is

Casino cashback returns a percentage of something you did at the casino over a set period. The headline percentage tells you little on its own. Three things decide what it is worth: what it is calculated on, whether it arrives as cash or as a bonus with wagering, and how much of it you can actually take out.

Cashback on deposits versus cashback on losses

"Cashback" can be worked out on very different bases:

BaseHow it worksWhat it means for you
Net lossesA share of deposits minus withdrawals and balance, over a periodClosest to a real refund on a losing run
DepositsA share of everything you paid in that dayPaid whether you won or lost, and grows the more you deposit
BetsA share of the total you betGrows with play, so it rewards spending time on the games

Mino Casino's Daily Cashback, which we read on its own promotion page, is the deposit kind. Its terms say it is "calculated as 5% of the total deposits made during the calendar day from 00:00 to 23:59 UTC". In Sydney during daylight saving, that UTC day runs from 11am to 10:59am the next morning. Paid as a bonus with wagering, a deposit-based cashback works much like a reload bonus, and the same break-even test applies.

Two more rules apply from the general bonus terms. Withdrawable money is used first, then the bonus money, so once a cashback bonus is active your own balance takes the first bets. Our sticky bonus guide explains why that order matters. And asking for a withdrawal while the bonus is still being wagered cancels it.

The maths: what 5% cashback with 30x wagering is worth

Worked example, using a typical pokies RTP of 96% (a 4% house edge):

  1. You deposit 200 in a day. Cashback at 5% is 10.
  2. Wagering is 30 x 10 = 300 in bets within 48 hours.
  3. The average cost of betting 300 at a 4% edge is 300 x 0.04 = 12.
  4. So the betting the offer asks for costs more on average (12) than the bonus pays (10).

On the VIP version with the same deposit, 7% gives 14, wagering is 20 x 14 = 280, and the average cost of that betting is 280 x 0.04 = 11.20, a little under the bonus.

A quick test follows from this: multiply the wagering by the house edge. Below 1, the required betting costs less than the cashback on average. Above 1, it costs more.

Wagering94% RTP (6% edge)96% RTP (4% edge)97% RTP (3% edge)
10x0.60.40.3
20x1.20.80.6
25x1.51.00.75
30x1.81.20.9
40x2.41.61.2

How often a cashback bonus turns into cash

If the bonus is the only money in your balance, you cannot lose more than the bonus, so the real question is how often it survives the wagering. We ran a simple simulation (our own model, not any casino's data): two made-up pokies, both with 96% RTP, one low and one high volatility, playing a 10 bonus at 1 a spin until either the 300 was wagered or the bonus ran out, 60,000 times each.

ModelCleared the 30x wageringAverage left to withdraw, per bonus
Low volatility pokieabout 15% of the timeabout 6
High volatility pokieabout 6% of the timeabout 8

So most of the time a 10 cashback ends at zero, and the average value is below its face value. If your own money is in the balance, the picture is worse: the general bonus terms say withdrawable money is bet first, so your cash takes the hits before the bonus does.

The RTP you use must be the RTP of the game you will actually play, shown in its info screen. Game weighting matters too: under the general bonus terms, pokies count 100% towards wagering, roulette 5%, and live dealer and table games cannot be played with a bonus at all. Try your own figures in the wagering requirements calculator.

The cap on the biggest cashback

The largest Daily Cashback is EUR 50, which needs EUR 1,000 of deposits in one day. Clearing it means EUR 1,500 of bets in 48 hours, at no more than EUR 5 a bet, so at least 300 spins. At a 4% edge those bets cost EUR 60 on average. A bigger cashback does not fix the maths; it just raises the deposit needed to get it.

Pundit tip: cashback calculated on deposits rewards depositing more. If an offer makes you want to top up "to get the full cashback", that is the offer working as designed, not working for you.

What good cashback looks like

The fairest version is paid on net losses, in cash, with no wagering and no cap on what you can withdraw. As an illustration only: 10% cash back on a net loss of 300 would return 30 you can withdraw straight away. The further a promotion drifts from that, through a deposit base, wagering, short expiry and caps, the less it is worth.

Before you accept any cashback, check:

  • What it is calculated on: losses, deposits or bets.
  • Whether it is cash or a bonus, and the wagering if it is a bonus.
  • The expiry, the maximum bet and the cap on winnings.
  • The time zone of the "day" or "week" it is counted over.

Each of these clauses is explained, with real wording from casinos' own terms, in our casino bonus terms guide, and the casino glossary defines the jargon.

Frequently asked questions

What is casino cashback?

A promotion that gives back a percentage of something you have done at the casino, usually losses, deposits or bets over a set period. It is normally paid as bonus money with wagering, not as cash you can withdraw straight away.

Is casino cashback paid on losses?

Not always. Mino Casino's Daily Cashback is calculated as 5% of total deposits made in the calendar day, whether you won or lost. Read how the cashback is calculated before you assume it is a refund on losses.

Can I withdraw casino cashback?

Only after meeting its wagering requirement, if there is one. Mino Casino's Daily Cashback must be wagered 30 times within 48 hours of claiming, and winnings from it are capped at EUR 500.

Is casino cashback worth it?

Multiply the wagering requirement by the house edge of the games you will play. If the result is above 1, the betting the offer requires costs more on average than the cashback pays. 30x wagering on 96% RTP pokies gives 1.2. In our simulation a cashback bonus with 30x wagering survived to withdrawal only about 6% to 15% of the time.

What is the best kind of casino cashback?

Cashback paid on net losses, in cash, with no wagering and no cap. It is also the rarest kind. The further an offer moves from that, the less it is worth.
