Max bet rule casino bonus: why one big spin can void your winnings

While a bonus is active, almost every casino caps your stake per spin, often at AUD 8. Break it once and the casino can cancel the bonus and everything it won. Here is why the rule exists, in numbers.

Chip stacks capped by a limit bar beside a stop sign and gift box, explaining the max bet rule on bonuses

Key facts

  • Seven of our partners set a maximum bet of AUD 8 while a bonus is active; Wild Tokyo, Mino Casino, LuckyOnes and Wanted Win also count bonus buys and bet doubling in it.
  • Caps vary elsewhere: AUD 7.5 at King Billy, RocketPlay and Spin Samurai, 3 AUD on Golden Crown's second and third deposit bonuses, 150 AUD on CrownPlay's welcome package.
  • One offer page can set a different cap from the general terms: National Casino's first deposit page says 6.5 AUD while its general terms say 8 AUD.
  • Breaking the cap can cost the bonus and its winnings: HellSpin and Bizzo say they can confiscate the winnings.
  • In our simulation of a $100 bonus at 35x, average value rose from about $54 at $1 spins to about $78 at $8 and $89 at $50, which is why casinos cap the stake.

What the max bet rule says

The max bet rule caps how much you can stake on a single spin, hand or round while a bonus is active. At our partners it is AUD 8. Wild Tokyo's, Mino Casino's and Rolling Slots' bonus terms set AUD 8, and so do LuckyOnes', VegasNow's, Lucky Dreams' and Wanted Win's. Above the cap, even for one spin, the casino can cancel the bonus and everything it produced.

These are offshore casinos. Online casino games cannot legally be offered to people in Australia, so no Australian regulator checks how fairly a casino applies a rule like this.

Maximum bets in casinos' own terms

From each casino's bonus terms or offer pages, read 8 and 9 October 2026:

CasinoMaximum bet with an active bonusWhat else counts
Wild Tokyo, Mino Casino (partners)AUD 8Bonus buys, purchased bonus rounds, bet doubling
LuckyOnes (partner)AUD 8Bet doubling, bonus rounds bought in a game
VegasNow, Lucky Dreams, Rolling Slots (partners)AUD 8Read the full clause before you play
Wanted Win (partner)AUD 8Bet doubling, bought bonus rounds
HellSpin, Bizzo8 AUDBought features; gamble and double features
National Casino8 AUD in general terms; 6.5 AUD on the first deposit bonus pageAs HellSpin
King Billy, RocketPlay, Spin Samurai7.5 AUDSpin Samurai includes gamble or double features and bought bonus rounds
Golden Crown7 AUD (first deposit), 3 AUD (second and third), 10 AUD defaultBonus buys and doubling on the first deposit offer
Ripper Casino$5, or $10 for VIP playersBuy feature
CrownPlay150 AUD on the welcome packageNot stated

Two lessons sit in that table. First, the cap is often set in euros and converted, which is why you see figures like 7.5 AUD (5 EUR in King Billy's terms). Second, the number on an offer page can differ from the general terms. National Casino's first deposit page says 6.5 AUD while its general bonus terms say 8 AUD; when two documents disagree, bet to the lower one.

What counts as one bet

The stake you see on the spin button is not always the whole bet. Terms commonly fold these into the cap:

  • Bonus buys. A feature buy priced at 100 times a 10 cent base bet is a $10 bet, over an AUD 8 cap. Our bonus buy pokies guide shows how buy prices are set.
  • Bet doubling. Wild Tokyo, Mino Casino, LuckyOnes and Wanted Win name it in the cap. Any setting that raises your stake per spin, such as an ante bet toggle, raises your bet for this rule.
  • Gamble features. Doubling a win on a card or coin flip counts toward the cap at Spin Samurai, HellSpin and Bizzo.

Pundit tip: before you accept a bonus, set your stake to a level comfortably under the cap and turn off any ante or bet multiplier option. One accidental tap on a buy button can cost the lot.

What breaking it costs

The usual penalty is the bonus and its winnings. HellSpin's and Bizzo's terms say that exceeding the cap lets them confiscate the winnings, and Wild Tokyo's and Mino Casino's general terms reserve the right to cancel bonuses and winnings obtained "in violation of the rules". If a breach is only spotted when you ask to withdraw, a single oversized bet early in a session can sink a win made hours later.

Why casinos cap the stake: the maths

At 35x wagering and 96% RTP, the expected cost of the required bets ($140 on a $100 bonus) is larger than the bonus, so if you bet small and play the full requirement, the house edge usually eats it. Big bets change that. With fewer spins, results swing more, and a lucky streak can leave a large balance. Casinos cap the stake to stop players using that swing.

We simulated a $100 bonus with 35x wagering ($3,500 in bets) on a made-up pokie with 96% RTP that hits on about a third of spins, 60,000 runs per stake. Our own model, not casino data:

Stake per spinMinimum spins to clearRuns that clearedAverage withdrawable per bonus
$13,500about 14%about $54
$21,750about 11%about $62
$5700about 8%about $73
$8 (the usual cap)438about 6%about $78
$25140about 4%about $78
$5070about 3%about $89

Bigger stakes clear the wagering less often but win far more when they do, so the average value rises. At $50 a spin the bonus was worth about $35 more on average than at $1. That is the edge the rule takes away.

It also shows something useful for you: even at the cap, the average value stayed below the $100 bonus. You can check any offer, including deposit bonuses where you have your own money at risk, in the wagering requirements calculator.

Time pressure and the cap together

The cap sets the minimum number of spins, and the time limit sets the pace. At AUD 8, $3,500 of wagering is at least 438 spins. With LuckyOnes' 7 days to wager, a $200 bonus at 40x means $8,000 of bets: at least 1,000 spins at the cap, or about $1,143 of bets a day. Higher volatility makes those spins swingier; our pokies volatility guide explains why.

How to stay inside the rule

  1. Find the cap in both the general bonus terms and the offer page, and use the lower figure.
  2. Check whether the cap is per spin, per round or per hand, and whether it includes buys and doubling.
  3. Set your stake before the bonus activates, and avoid games with ante bet toggles.
  4. Do not play table games with a bonus unless the terms allow them.
  5. If you break the rule by accident, tell support straight away and ask in writing what happens next.

The max bet rule is one of a dozen clauses that decide what you keep. The sticky bonus guide explains the cash out rules, casino bonus terms and conditions runs through the rest, and the no deposit bonus guide shows the caps on free offers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max bet rule in a casino bonus?

It is the largest stake you may place on one spin or hand while a bonus is active. Our partners' terms set it at AUD 8. Bets above it, even once, can lead the casino to cancel the bonus and any winnings made with it.

Does a bonus buy count towards the max bet?

Usually yes. Wild Tokyo's and Mino Casino's terms include bonus buy features, purchased bonus rounds and bet doubling in the AUD 8 cap, and Bizzo's say feature buys count toward the bet. A 100x bonus buy on an 8 cent base bet is an $8 bet.

What happens if I go over the maximum bet?

The casino can void the bonus and what it won. HellSpin's and Bizzo's terms say exceeding the cap lets them confiscate the winnings. A breach early in a session can cost a win made much later.

Why do casinos have a maximum bet with bonuses?

Because bigger bets make a bonus more valuable to the player. In our simulation, raising the stake from $1 to $8 on a $100 bonus at 35x lifted its average value from about $54 to about $78, even though fewer runs cleared the wagering.

Does the max bet rule apply after I finish wagering?

The partners' terms tie it to an active bonus, so once wagering is complete and the bonus has turned into real money the cap no longer applies. Check the balance screen shows no active bonus before you raise your stake.
