Oscars Grind betting system: one unit per series, and the series that never end

Oscar's Grind aims for one unit of profit per series and only raises the bet after a win. It is the most patient system on the table; our exact maths shows how often it works and what the rare long series cost.

Key facts

  • Oscar's Grind plays a series until it is one unit ahead. After a loss the bet stays the same; after a win it rises by one unit, but never above what is needed to finish the series one unit up.
  • 48.65% of series end on the first spin, a single win on red. The rest can take a long time: in our simulation 1 series in 100 needed 43 spins or more.
  • With a $500 bankroll at $5 units, 98.40% of series finish $5 up and 1.60% bust, losing $464.70 on average, in our exact calculation.
  • One bust wipes out about 93 completed series. The expected loss is exactly 2.70% of the total bet for every bankroll we tested.

How the Oscars Grind betting system works

The Oscars Grind betting system breaks play into series, each with one goal: finish one unit ahead. It is used on even-money bets such as red or black. The rules:

  1. Start a series with a bet of one unit.
  2. After a loss: bet the same amount again.
  3. After a win: raise the bet by one unit.
  4. The cap: never bet more than the amount that would bring the series to exactly +1 unit if it wins.
  5. When the series reaches +1 unit, it is over. Start a new one at one unit.

Rule 4 is what makes Oscar's Grind different from other systems. Bets only climb after wins, and only as far as needed.

A worked series at $5 a unit

Results: loss, loss, win, loss, win, win.

SpinBetResultSeries totalNext bet and why
1$5Loss-$5$5: same after a loss
2$5Loss-$10$5: same after a loss
3$5Win-$5$10: up one unit after a win
4$10Loss-$15$10: same after a loss
5$10Win-$5$10: a raise to $15 would overshoot, so the cap holds it at $10
6$10Win+$5Series over

Three wins and three losses, and the series still finishes $5 ahead, because the wins came at higher stakes than the early losses. That is the "grind": small, patient, one unit at a time.

Exact odds for four bankrolls

We calculated every possible path of an Oscar's Grind series exactly, on a single zero wheel, ending the series as a bust when the next bet could not be covered.

Bankroll ($5 units)Series finish +$5Series bustAverage loss on a bustAverage result per seriesAverage staked per series
$100 (20 units)93.57%6.43%$90.45-$1.14$42.19
$250 (50 units)97.09%2.91%$229.20-$1.81$66.95
$500 (100 units)98.40%1.60%$464.70-$2.52$93.19
$1,000 (200 units)99.10%0.90%$941.55-$3.48$128.89

Every row loses exactly 2.70% of the amount staked. A deeper bankroll busts less often, but each bust is bigger and you bet more per series, so the average cost per series goes up, not down.

The trade is lopsided. With $500 behind you, a bust costs about $465 and a completed series wins $5, so one bust erases roughly 93 good series. At 1.60% per series, a bust comes about once every 62 series on average.

How long a series can run

Half the time Oscar's Grind is a one-spin system: 48.65% of series win the first bet and stop. The trouble is the other half. Because a loss does not raise the bet, a series that falls behind needs a run of wins to climb out, and a run of more losses than wins just keeps it open.

From our simulation of 300,000 series with a 100-unit bankroll:

MeasureSpins
Series over in one spin48.65% (exact)
9 in 10 series finished within15 spins
99 in 100 series finished within43 spins

With no bankroll limit at all, a series still fell more than 10 units behind at some point 9.31% of the time, more than 20 units behind 5.34% of the time and more than 100 units behind 1.44% of the time. Those are the series that turn a patient grinder into a loss chaser.

Pundit tip: decide in advance how many units down you will let a single series go. Ending a series at, say, minus 20 units is a loss you chose; ending it when the money runs out is a loss that chose you.

Oscar's Grind and the Martingale share a goal, one unit per cycle, and the same weakness: the cycle can only end in profit, so the losses hide in the cycles that never end. Our Martingale calculator shows how much faster the doubling version gets expensive.

The edge does not care about the system

Each spin carries the same 1 in 37 house edge whatever came before, which is why the expected loss lines up with 2.70% of the stake in every row above. The VGCCC's summary of table games is short: they all provide a significant house edge to the casino. Our house edge guide shows how that edge compares across games.

Frequently asked questions

What is Oscar's Grind?

Oscar's Grind is a betting system for even-money bets that aims to win one unit per series. You keep your bet the same after a loss and raise it by one unit after a win, but you never bet more than you need to finish the series one unit ahead. When the series is one unit up, you start again.

Is the Oscars Grind betting system safe?

It is gentle but not safe. Bets rise only after wins, so they grow slowly, but a long run of more losses than wins keeps a series open for dozens of spins. In our calculation 1.60% of series bust a 100-unit bankroll.

How long does an Oscar's Grind series take?

Nearly half end in one spin, but the tail is long. In our simulation with a 100-unit bankroll, 9 in 10 series were over within 15 spins and 1 in 100 took 43 spins or more.

Does Oscar's Grind beat roulette?

No. In our exact calculation with a 100-unit bankroll, each series loses 0.50 units on average while betting 18.64 units, which is 2.70%, exactly the single zero house edge.

Why does Oscar's Grind cap the bet?

So that a winning streak never overshoots the one-unit goal. If you are 1 unit down and the next raise would be 3 units, you bet only 2, because a win of 2 brings you to exactly +1.
