Live baccarat: speed tables, lightning fees and what each format costs

Live baccarat streams a real dealer and a real shoe, but the format you pick changes the price. Speed rounds double the hands per hour, and Lightning tables add a 20% fee to every bet.

Key facts

  • Live dealer baccarat is a real table streamed from a studio. The cards follow the same drawing rules as any casino, so the banker bet keeps its 1.06% house edge on 8 decks, in our calculation.
  • Evolution says a standard live round takes 48 seconds and a Speed Baccarat round 27 seconds: about 75 against 133 hands an hour.
  • Lightning Baccarat adds a 20% fee to every bet in exchange for random multipliers of 2x to 8x; XXXtreme Lightning adds a 50% fee.
  • No Commission Baccarat pays only half on a banker win with 6, which lifts the banker edge from 1.06% to 1.46% in our calculation.
  • Live online baccarat is a casino game that cannot legally be offered to people in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act. It is not an offence to play, but you have no local protection.

What live baccarat is

Live baccarat is a real baccarat table filmed in a studio and streamed to your screen. A dealer draws from a physical shoe, a camera and card reader record each card, and your bets are placed through an on-screen layout. The drawing rules are the standard ones, so the maths of each hand is the same as at a casino table. What changes is the pace, the extra fees on some formats and who is responsible if something goes wrong.

Evolution, which says it has a leading position in live casino in Europe and North America, runs its live tables from studios including Riga, Malta and Tbilisi. Its published licence list does not include any Australian licence. More on the company on our Evolution Gaming page.

Live dealer baccarat formats compared

Evolution's own game pages describe the main formats. Here is what each one changes:

FormatWhat is differentCost effect
Standard live baccarat48 second rounds, side bets such as player pair and banker pairBanker 1.06%, player 1.24% (our 8 deck figures)
Speed Baccarat27 second rounds, cards dealt face upSame edge per hand, about 1.8 times the hands per hour
Super Speed BaccaratFaster again, minimal betting timeSame edge per hand, more hands still
No Commission BaccaratNo 5% commission, but a banker win with 6 pays 0.5 to 1Banker edge rises to 1.46% in our calculation
Lightning Baccarat1 to 5 random Lightning Cards a round with 2x to 8x multipliers; 20% fee on every betYou pay $12 to bet $10
XXXtreme Lightning Baccarat4 to 8 Lightning Cards, multipliers up to 10x; 50% feeYou pay $15 to bet $10

The odds on banker and player do not care about camera angles. They do care about commission rules and fees, and those vary from table to table.

Speed baccarat and the hourly cost

A faster table does not change the house edge on a hand. It changes how many hands you play, and your expected loss grows with every hand. Using Evolution's round times and a flat $10 banker bet on every round:

TableRounds an hourAmount bet an hourAverage loss an hour, banker
Standard (48 seconds)75$750$7.94
Speed (27 seconds)133$1,333$14.11

The Speed table costs about 78% more per hour for the same bet size, purely because of the pace. If you like the faster format, the fair comparison is to halve your bet, not to keep it the same. These are averages: any single hour can be well above or below them.

The Lightning fee in plain numbers

Lightning Baccarat works like this, according to Evolution: before each deal, one to five Lightning Cards are drawn from a virtual 52 card deck and each gets a random multiplier of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x. If your winning hand contains a Lightning Card, the win is multiplied. To pay for those multipliers, "a 20% Lightning Fee is added to each player's total bet".

That fee is charged on every bet, win or lose:

You betFeeTotal cost of the round
$10 on banker, Lightning$2.00$12.00
$10 on banker, XXXtreme Lightning$5.00$15.00
$10 on banker, standard tablenone$10.00 (5% commission only on wins)

Over 100 Lightning rounds at $10 you hand over $200 in fees before a single card is dealt. The multipliers pay some of that back, but only on the rounds where a Lightning Card lands in your winning hand. Evolution says XXXtreme Lightning can multiply a tie bet with six matching Lightning Cards up to 2,850,000x, which tells you how rarely the biggest multipliers must arrive.

The game pages we read do not state a return to player figure for either Lightning version. Without that figure you cannot compare the fee against a standard table, so look for the stated return in the game's own rules or help screen before you play, and skip the table if you cannot find one.

Pundit tip: a fee charged on every bet is a fixed cost, and a multiplier is a rare one-off. If the stated return is not in front of you, assume the fee is doing most of the work.

Side bets and roads on live tables

Live tables show "big road" and "bead plate" scorecards of past results. They are the same as the paper scorecards in a casino: a record of what happened, with no influence on the next hand. Pairs and similar side bets on live tables carry the same kind of edges we calculate on our baccarat strategy page, mostly above 10%.

Live dealer baccarat in Australia

Baccarat is played legally in person at licensed Australian casinos, under rules each state regulator approves. Online baccarat, live or animated, is a casino-style game that cannot legally be offered to people in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. ACMA lists online casino games among illegal services and has blocked many offshore gambling sites. Playing is not an offence for you, but if an offshore site refuses a withdrawal there is no Australian regulator to step in. Our live dealer casinos page covers how these sites operate, and the Interactive Gambling Act page explains the law.

For the cheapest way to play any casino game, the house edge guide shows how each figure is worked out, and best odds casino games ranks baccarat against the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is live baccarat rigged?

A live table uses a physical shoe and fixed drawing rules, so the game itself works like casino baccarat. The risk for Australians is the site, not the cards: online casinos cannot be licensed to serve Australia, so there is no local regulator to complain to if a payout is refused.

What is speed baccarat?

It is the same game dealt faster. Evolution says its Speed Baccarat rounds take 27 seconds, against 48 seconds for a standard round, with cards dealt face up. The odds per hand are unchanged, but you play nearly twice as many hands an hour.

Is Lightning Baccarat worth it?

It costs more up front. Evolution adds a 20% Lightning Fee to each bet, so a $10 bet costs $12, in exchange for random multipliers on winning hands. The game pages we read do not publish a return figure, so check the game's own rules screen before you play.

Can I play live dealer baccarat legally in Australia?

Not online from a licensed Australian site. Online casino games cannot legally be offered to people in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Baccarat is legal in person at licensed Australian casinos.

Which live baccarat bet has the best odds?

Banker on a table that charges a 5% commission: 1.06% house edge on 8 decks in our calculation. Player is 1.24%. Tie and pair side bets run above 10%.
